The Masonic Foundation of Ontario supports research into prostate cancer through three university and hospital research centres: Western University through the London Health Sciences Foundation, McMaster University through St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation and Queen’s University with the Kingston Health Sciences Centre.

Through its supporters, the Foundation has raised over a million dollars and has used more than half of that number to fund yearly research into a wide range of issues that face those who face prostate cancer.

Research focuses on the ability to “light up” the smallest of cancer cells through dyes/tracers which are injected into the body and go right to the cancer. This enables clinicians to determine if cancer is present and if cancer is spreading. Seeing the cancer, even the smallest or well-hidden cancers can now be detected and treated.

Research is progressing on tracers that can see and treat the cancer at the same time – “Theranostics” – a radiopharmaceutical that can see and treat simultaneously, which would be a major step forward as it cuts down on the time between detection and treatment.

One research team is currently developing a new drug for prostate cancer treatment targeted towards the late-stages of the disease – when the cancer is often at its hardest to treat.

This exciting research has been supported for many years by the MFO and we look forward to supporting these dedicated researchers for many years to come.
